England national team coach Thomas Tuchel has spoken out about the controversial decision to omit several star players from the 2026 World Cup squad. Big names like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Harry Maguire, and Trent Alexander-Arnold were not included in the Three Lions' final list.
Tuchel's decision sparked debate among England supporters. Many supporters questioned the absence of several players who have been key players at both club and national level.
In an interview quoted from Sky Sports, Friday (22/5/2026), Tuchel admitted that the process of determining the World Cup squad was a very emotional and difficult decision.
"I respect them all, both as players and as individuals. They've all been in training camp and have played very well. Of course, it's very difficult for me to make phone calls to players who will join," said coach Thomas Tuchel.
According to him, the player selection process was carried out through various evaluations and changes to the squad composition over the past few months.
"Reducing the number of absent players is difficult, sometimes very difficult. Even when I'm on the phone, I feel the emotions," he said.
Tuchel added that all players who had attended the training camp actually had an equal chance of making the final squad.
"I've called every player who was at training camp with us at least once. Many of them deserve to be with us," he continued.
The German coach explained that changes in the squad began to be visible between September and November. He believes the addition of several young players has given the team new energy.
“The team had a few changes in November, it felt like we had a bit of a breath of fresh air, young players playing with a lot of passion,” he said.
He also emphasized that his squad is an ideal combination of senior and young players to face the immense pressure of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"And it was a good mix of young and senior players, bringing out the best in the players. We want to recreate that spirit. That's why we're relying so heavily on the group that was with us at those three camps," he said.
Thomas Tuchel ensures that player selection decisions are based on tactical and positional needs, not just player popularity.
“For some people, it's a positional issue and not about bringing in five number 10s and forcing them to play out of position,” he said.
England are scheduled to begin their 2026 World Cup group stage against the Croatia national football team in Dallas on June 17. After that, the Three Lions will face the Ghana national football team on June 23 and the Panama national football team on June 27.
Regarding England's chances at the World Cup, Tuchel said he remains optimistic as long as the players show full commitment on the pitch.
"I can dream. But you quickly come back and break it down into steps you can influence," Tuchel said.
