West Ham United has been relegated to the second tier after 14 seasons in the Premier League. The 2025/2026 season was a period of turmoil for the Hammers, with managerial changes, failed transfers, and inconsistent performances on the pitch.
West Ham's relegation was confirmed after they failed to escape the relegation zone until the final week of the season. Ironically, the London club finished the season with 39 points, one of the highest tallies for a relegated team in modern Premier League history.
Signs of doom were already evident from the start of the season. West Ham were thrashed 3-0 by Sunderland in their opening match, a result that served as an early warning sign of their poor form throughout the season.
The situation worsened when manager Graham Potter was sacked in September 2025, after just one win in five league games. At that point, West Ham were stranded in 19th place with a goal difference of minus eight.
Graham Potter's replacement, Nuno Espirito Santo, failed to bring significant change. In his first 16 games, West Ham collected just 11 points and failed to maintain their lead several times.
One of the most notable moments came when West Ham drew 2-2 against AFC Bournemouth after leading 2-0. By the end of the season, the Hammers had dropped 20 points from their leading position.
The problems aren't limited to tactics. The club's transfer policy has also come under scrutiny, as it's perceived failure to significantly strengthen the squad.
West Ham has lost a number of creative players in recent seasons, including Mohamed Kudus, Manuel Lanzini, and Pablo Fornals. However, their replacements have not been deemed capable of making a significant impact.
The club was also deemed too late to improve its defense. West Ham conceded 65 goals throughout the season and finished with a goal difference of minus 19, the fourth-worst in the league, on Monday (May 25, 2026).
The arrival of Axel Disasi in the January transfer window did improve the team's defense. However, the changes came too late to save them from relegation.
In attack, the new players' performances have also fallen short of expectations. Argentine striker Taty Castellanos has only scored four Premier League goals, while Pablo and Adama Traore have failed to find the net at all in the league.
The departure of Lucas Paqueta in January further exacerbated the situation. The Brazilian midfielder had previously been West Ham's creative powerhouse and played a crucial role in the team's play.
Since Paqueta's departure, team captain Jarrod Bowen has only managed one league goal. The team's heavy reliance on a few key players has further diminished its performance.
Off the pitch, fan protests continued throughout the season. Some fans felt the move from Upton Park to London Stadium several years ago had diminished the club's identity.
The successes of the David Moyes era, including winning the 2023 UEFA Conference League, now seem increasingly distant. After finishing 14th last season, West Ham have finally had to accept relegation to the Championship.
Despite this, West Ham's squad is still predicted to be a strong candidate for promotion next season. However, the threat of losing several star players due to relegation is expected to pose a major challenge for the club.
